Why insulation performs differently in Canterbury

Canterbury’s cold, frosty winters and its large stock of pre-1980s timber-framed homes make insulation one of the most effective upgrades in the region. Many older Christchurch homes still have empty wall cavities and uninsulated suspended timber floors, which is exactly what blown loosefill is built for.

New builds, Building Code H1

Canterbury sits in H1 climate zone 5, one of the colder zones in the country. Zone 5 sets higher thermal performance expectations than the upper North Island, and it is the zone your designer or installer will work to.

H1/AS1 moved to its sixth edition on 27 November 2025 and the schedule method was removed, so required R-values now come from the calculation method rather than a fixed table. Read the R-value guide or use the insulation calculators to work out what your build needs.

Rentals, Healthy Homes standard

Canterbury is Healthy Homes zone 3, which carries the highest ceiling requirement of the three zones. Every rental property must meet these minimums.
