Why insulation performs differently in Auckland

Auckland sits in H1 climate zone 1, the mildest of the six. The region’s large stock of mid-century timber-framed homes was built long before wall insulation was required, which is what makes retrofit blown insulation so effective here. Blown loosefill fills the cavity evenly and gets into the awkward places batts leave open, which is where most of the heat actually goes.

New builds, Building Code H1

Auckland sits in H1 climate zone 1, the mildest of the six. The region’s large stock of mid-century timber-framed homes was built long before wall insulation was required, which is what makes retrofit blown insulation so effective here.

H1/AS1 moved to its sixth edition on 27 November 2025 and the schedule method was removed, so required R-values now come from the calculation method rather than a fixed table. Read the R-value guide or use the insulation calculators to work out what your build needs.
