    Prepare the walls

    We start by preparing your walls to be insulated. We do this by drilling small holes into your cladding or plasterboard through which CosyWall Insulation can be installed.

    We take the greatest of care when adding penetrations to your walls to ensure they can be easily repaired once wall insulation has been added.

    Fill the walls

    Once your walls are prepared for insulation, we are able to fill them with CosyWall. Wall Insulation is blown into the cavity using specialised equipment to ensure the right thermal densities are achieved.

    Blown wall insulation is ideal when adding retrofit insulation to your home as it gets into all the gaps and voids which are often left uninsulated by other products.

    Repair the walls

    Once your walls have been insulated, we go through a repair process that includes filling and sanding every penetration. We ensure your home is fully weathertight and, on painted cladding, ready for a fresh coat of paint.

    Once we’ve completed the process you’ll never know we were there and all you’ll be left with is a nice and cosy, more energy efficient home.

    Wall insulation in NZ, what it costs and what to expect

    Wall insulation for an existing home starts with an assessment of your house. CosyWall is blown into the wall cavity through small holes, from the outside or the inside, so your linings and cladding stay where they are.

    What it costs

    The cost depends on the size and shape of your home, so we do not publish a single figure. For a rough number with GST included, use our retrofit wall insulation calculator. For a firm price, request a quote and an installer will assess your home. Once CosyWall is in the wall, there are no running costs. Many customers also find a payment plan can be arranged, so ask when you enquire.

    What to expect on the day

    Most installations take a couple of days, depending on the size and complexity of the house. Exterior work can happen all year round. Interior work is usually done while you are redecorating. You do not need to strip any linings.

    Who it suits

    CosyWall suits existing homes, including brick, weatherboard, fibre cement and stucco, where the walls were left empty when the house was built. It also suits landlords who want to go beyond the minimum ceiling and underfloor standard.

    What happens, step by step

    1. Enquire. Fill in the quote form or call us. Your enquiry goes to the Safe-R network installer for your region.
    2. Assessment. A qualified assessor looks at your home and checks it is suitable. The main requirement is that the house is weathertight. They choose the hole size to suit your house.
    3. Access. On the day, the installer drills small holes in the cladding or plasterboard.
    4. Fill. Specialised equipment blows CosyWall into each cavity at a density that will not shrink or slump.
    5. Seal and finish. Every hole is sealed, filled and sanded. We ensure your home is fully weathertight and, on painted cladding, ready for a fresh coat of paint.

    Why older homes are often missing wall insulation

    Many New Zealand homes built before 1990 went up with little or no insulation in the walls. Since then, plenty of owners have added ceiling and underfloor insulation, and the walls have been left as they were. That leaves a gap in the home’s thermal barrier, and it is often why a house still feels cold after the easy upgrades are done. CosyWall suits these homes because Safe-R blows loosefill fibreglass (glasswool) into the wall cavity through small holes, so a villa, bungalow or 1970s weatherboard can be insulated without taking the linings off.

    Warmer walls, less condensation and mould

    Cold wall surfaces are where moist indoor air turns to condensation, and that damp is what feeds mould and musty smells in winter. Insulating the walls keeps the inside surface warmer, so less condensation forms on it. Insulation works best alongside good ventilation and a weathertight house, which is why the assessor checks that the house is weathertight before any CosyWall goes in.
