Why insulation performs differently in the Waikato

The Waikato sits in H1 climate zone 2. Inland winters are colder and frostier than the coast, and the region’s damp winter air makes a well-sealed, evenly filled ceiling and wall cavity worth more than the zone number alone suggests. Blown loosefill fills the cavity evenly and gets into the awkward places batts leave open, which is where most of the heat actually goes.

New builds, Building Code H1

The Waikato sits in H1 climate zone 2. Inland winters are colder and frostier than the coast, and the region’s damp winter air makes a well-sealed, evenly filled ceiling and wall cavity worth more than the zone number alone suggests.

H1/AS1 moved to its sixth edition on 27 November 2025 and the schedule method was removed, so required R-values now come from the calculation method rather than a fixed table. Read the R-value guide or use the insulation calculators to work out what your build needs.

Rentals, Healthy Homes standard

The Waikato is in Healthy Homes zone 1 and 2. Every rental property must meet these minimums above and below all living spaces.
