Underfloor Insulation for Wooden and Timber Floors
Most New Zealand homes built before the 1990s sit on a timber floor over an open sub floor space. The floorboards are usually the only thing between your living room and cold air and moisture under your home, and timber floors are not an effective thermal barrier. This is why wooden floors feel so cold in the winter, regardless of how long the heater has been running for. It's also why so much of a home's heat loss happens straight through the floor.
Warmafloor is blown in underneath the floorboards, between the floor joists, and held up against the underside of the floor with a special membrane barrier called a BIB. Because it is blown rather than cut and fitted, it fills the full width of every joist bay and packs in around pipes, wiring and the irregular framing you find under an older house. Warmafloor provides a complete and effective thermal barrier to the underside of your home.
It also prevents air and moisture moving up through the gaps between floorboards, which is often the first thing people notice in any home with polished timber floors.
Underfloor insulation options for a timber floor
Until recently, insulating an existing wooden floor meant fitting a segment or blanket product up between the joists and holding it there. This was often paired with the installation of a vapour barrier pinned to the ground. Those products work, but they have to be cut around every pipe and cable, and the joints and gaps left behind are exactly where heat loss occurs.
Blown insulation is a loose glasswool material, held in place with a membrane that replaces the need for a ground vapour barrier. The nature of blown insulation means that when it's installed, it takes the shape of the cavity instead of you having to make the cavity take the shape of the product. This provides an effective and consistent thermal barrier across the entire floor.
